Media “impact” over substance

Posted by Adrian on June 12, 2007, 162:51 pm

Outgoing Prime Minister Blair makes some great points in this short article. With always-on media services and mediums, cultural and political acts come under much more constant surveillance. Where does journalistic integrity lie in the face of competition?

Moreover, I’ve been quite disappointed with the lack of variety in news services. Reuters, AP, and even al-Jazeera consistently run the exact same story and images across the wire. Isn’t competition supposed to foster innovation and excellence? Also, these corporations have come to dominate international news since the barriers to entry (a worldwide news service) are so high.

That’s why I believe in diverse and situated expression. This blog for example. Or LiveLeak. And then sometimes you just have to get your media funnies.

Good Political Tirade - check out the video

I think Olbermann’s strongest point is that our politicians (yes, ours) have become deaf to our voices. As he also expands, the American public is ahead of the politicians, the media, and our foreign policy. Perhaps it’s time for the national initiative.

Study Break

Posted by Adrian on June 5, 2007, 155:15 pm

I was studying for my exam in the History of the Sixties, and came across this article about the Weathermen and their public relations. The author illustrates a paradox -how to achieve publicity from the underground- which I believe has a very modern and relevant application.

We cannot hide in the mythical underground anymore because there are simply too many of us. The anonymity present in communities, the mass swirlings of information on the web, in dialogs, or on the earth - they all seem to drown out, or at least equalize each other voice.

You know what, I just read what I’ve written, and I think I’ll leave it at that before I go any further. Also, I should probably get back to work.

Oddly enough

Lion, tiger kill man at meat plant.

I wish I had come up with this title, but it was not me. We have Reuters to thank for that. Why does Reuters never give the writer credit anyway? It’s not as if the corporate body wrote this piece.

Anyhoo, I just thought it was totally righteous and coincidental that a meat plant working feeding his pet carnivores (caged on the top of the factory), was eaten by them. Also, the short article really goes into detail about the attack, “which left scraps of bloodstained clothing on the floor of the cage”. Mmmm.

And then the part about the animal protection authorities sedating the tiger and securing it’s muzzle with a block of wood… only to have the animal suffocate on the way to the zoo. Woops.
